Mouth shields have been thoroughly used in various foodservice settings for a long time. In the past, they are more commonly used in salad bars, sandwich bars, buffets, and other settings where the server could be speaking to customers over the food ingredients. In recent times, more establishments are seeing this PPE as a necessity to keep food and ingredients safe from salivary and respiratory droplets.
These mouth shields do not take the place of masks or face shields, they can be an added layer of protection, depending on what your establishment needs. Typically, mouth shields are recommended for food service employees who regularly work while food or ingredients is on a lower surface under them (e.g. cooks, salad servers, etc.) Because some face shields are loose on the bottom, salivary or respiratory droplets can get through. A mouth shield, however, blocks droplets moving down from the face. A combination of PPE may be required depending on updated regulations and advisories in your area.
