Usersshouldbeawareofthespotsizeoftheinfraredthermometersmeasurementarea.Theyshouldalsoconsiderthedistance-to-targetrecommendationsoftheinstrument.Theangleofthesensortothesubjectisalsoimportant.
Ifthegeneral-purposeIRthermometerhasalaser-pointingfeature,itisbesttoturnthelaseroffifpossible(orcoveritwithtape)andalwaysusegreatcaretoavoidpointingitatsomeoneseyes.Thelaserisnotpartofthemeasurementtechnologyandisonlyusedtoassistinaiming.
SomeindustrialIRthermometersallowtheadjustmentoftheemissivitysetting.Inmedicalliteraturehumanskinisnotedtohaveanemissivitybetween0.95and0.99regardlessofcolor.Bysettinganadjustableemissivityto0.78,theinstrumentwillgiveaforeheadtemperaturereadingthatapproximatesthenormaloraltemperature.Thisapproximatesanoffsettothereadingthatwillrenderameasurementnear98.6Fontheforeheadofahealthyindividual.
